Community-Led Transport: A Lifeline for Many

I’d like to acknowledge the incredible work of Durrington & District Link, whose volunteer drivers do so much in our local community. I asked Ruth Allen to outline her teams work and she came back with the following:

Durrington & District Link – Supporting Our Community Through Transport

In 2024, Durrington Link Drivers completed over 250 trips to Salisbury District Hospital alone. In total, our dedicated volunteer drivers transported clients to more than 1,200 health and social appointments, covering an impressive 24,682 miles. This equates to an average of 1,500 miles per driver, though some covered even greater distances.

Who We Are

Durrington Link Team

Durrington & District Link is a volunteer-run transport service that helps local residents get to essential appointments, including:

  • Hospitals

  • Doctors, dentists, and opticians

  • Hairdressers

  • Shopping trips and other social visits

Our service is funded entirely by donations from those who use it, ensuring we can continue supporting the community.

Our Team

We currently have 16 volunteer drivers, each offering their time on different days throughout the week (Monday to Friday). Some drivers prefer shorter local journeys, while others are happy to take on longer trips to destinations such as:

  • Salisbury District Hospital

  • New Hall Hospital

  • Swindon, Warminster, Bournemouth, and Southampton

To coordinate these trips, we have a dedicated team of four volunteer coordinators, who take turns managing transport requests. They work hard to match drivers with clients, ensuring as many journeys as possible are accommodated—even last-minute requests.

Can You Help?

We are always looking for new volunteer drivers to join our team. If you have spare time and would like to make a difference in your community, we’d love to hear from you.

Kind regards,
Ruth Allen

Thank you Ruth for sharing that, and the time and effort the Links team put into supporting the Durrington Community
