Planting Hedges & Trees – Thinking of Others
A big thank you to all residents who keep their hedges and trees well-maintained, ensuring they don’t cause a nuisance to others. However, every year, I receive complaints about overgrown hedges and trees, particularly those that reduce pavement width and obstruct public pathways.
Choosing the Right Hedge or Tree
Before planting, it’s important to select species carefully to avoid future problems. Here are a few key considerations:
✅ Size Matters – Ensure your chosen plant won’t outgrow its space or cause issues for neighbors.
✅ Root Awareness – Be mindful of roots that could disturb drainage or underground utilities.
✅ Avoid Fast-Growing Shrubs – Plants like Laurel may seem like a good idea at first but can quickly become unmanageable.
Preventing Disputes
Overgrown hedges and trees are a common source of neighborhood disputes. To keep things harmonious:
Regularly trim hedges to prevent them from encroaching on public footpaths.
Check local guidelines to ensure compliance with regulations.
Consider your neighbors when planting to avoid future conflicts.
The picture below shows how a small planting decision can turn into a big issue over time. Plan wisely today to avoid headaches tomorrow!
Let’s work together to keep our community green, safe, and accessible for everyone.
